Character Name: Lloyd Irving
Character Age: 17
Canon: Tales of Symphonia
Canon Point: Post good ending; Zelos path
History: Give me your name and I'll give you mine!
Due to the nature of the affection ranks in the game, certain events are prone to occur differently in each playthrough depending on who Lloyd is closest with in the game at the time. The important differences to note for Lloyd's history in this version boil down to these:
Personality: - Zelos "betrays" the team only to double-cross Mithos at the appropriate time and side inevitably with Lloyd. he does not die.
- this conversation at Dirk's, this one in Flanoir, and this one in Heimdal wind up occurring between Lloyd and Zelos. as a result of the Flanoir conversation, Lloyd currently has in his possession Zelos' Chosen Orb.
- though it won't come up until I eventually canon update him to the second game, this path also means that when Lloyd went off to go search for exspheres at the end of the first game, Zelos went with him.
So let's talk about Lloyd.
![]() | On the surface, Lloyd Irving is an energetic and friendly, if somewhat childish boy. He makes friends easy, loves easy, and has more than enough of that love to go around. He gets excited quickly by new things but, as a result, also has a tendency to get bored with things just as fast. Despite being seventeen, Lloyd can be remarkably naive about things that even his twelve year old friend Genis has no trouble comprehending. Most notably in regards to dating and the like, though going on the journey of regeneration does a remarkable job of opening his eyes to the darker sides of humanity as well. |
While it's undeniable that Lloyd isn't the brightest guy around, it's important to explain that it mostly comes down to books. Lloyd simply isn't suited to a school setting, really. When he thinks it's important, he listens, and he observes, and he figures things out. Sometimes you just have to make him sit still long enough to do so first. Because the fact of the matter is while Lloyd might be absolutely abysmal at history or math, he's an incredibly intuitive person when it comes to real life problems or people. Lloyd's super power is understanding people, to the point where he can even turn that understanding inward, as revealed in a pretty insightful conversation he has with Raine at one point about growing up. Lloyd is not stupid, he's just got different priorities, honestly. | ![]() |
![]() | Boiled down to his most basic component, Lloyd is the living embodiment of earnestness. Raised by his dwarf dad after he was found at the bottom of a cliff at the age of three, Lloyd was brought up on the Dwarven vows, and they're all pretty earnest, heartfelt things about never lying, helping out anyone in need, etc. Lloyd might have a tendency to react a little rashly sometimes, but his heart is always in the right place and he always makes things right in the end, no matter how much effort it takes. He tries to take the world's problems onto his shoulders, and he doesn't believe in choosing the lesser of two evils. |
Because most firmly of all, Lloyd is an idealist. A "gentle idealist" who believes that there can be a world where everyone is happy and everyone is safe. This is actually his defining motion in the game, to the point that the phrase is actually given to him as a title. It's Lloyd's idealism that shapes the fate of both Sylverant and Tethe'alla, first when Lloyd refuses to accept that saving the world means losing his friend, and again later when he decides that one world's health should not depend on another world's destruction. And he does everything in his power to see his ideals realized. Unlike Mithos, who Lloyd is compared to on several occasions, Lloyd never loses sight of his dream. His enthusiasm can be pretty contagious too. | ![]() |
This bright eyed idealism isn't just reserved for the shape of the world itself, however, but for the quality of people in it as well. He believes in people, and it hits him hard any time someone betrays that trust, whether it be a complete stranger or a close friend. To him, they're not just betraying him, they're betraying themselves as well.
Most of the time, he even understands why they did it. Lloyd maintains that he understands Mithos' actions, even if he can never accept them. Lloyd's forgiveness is a curious thing, because the fact that he gives it to someone doesn't absolve them of the things they've done or even grant them his approval. It simply means he understands.
He also lets Presea decide on her own time how she feels about Regal killing her sister. He never pressures her to forgive him, because he knows there's no point to the forgiveness if she doesn't mean it. That rushing it would only hurt both her and Regal in the end.

![]() | Lloyd isn't hugely prone to self-doubt, though there are a few big instances during their journey where things pile down on him pretty deep and he needs a hand up again from a friend. He always inevitably bounces back from those moments with more fervence and determination than ever before. It's genuinely impossible to keep Lloyd down for long. Especially if you're trying to be mean to one of his friends. While Lloyd tends to hesitate to come to his own defense, he'll never hesitate to do so for any of his friends. Because Lloyd loves his friends, trusts them, would do anything to protect them. The fact that he's far less willing for them to do that same for him, is honestly a bit hypocritical. |
Lloyd's never had a problem trying to shoulder the world anyway.
And lastly on a more solemn note, it's extremely necessary to point out that while Lloyd won't hesitate to kill if the situation calls for it, he also acknowledges the responsibility inherent in such an action. That taking a life means taking responsibility for that life. For all that Lloyd can seem like a silly and thoughtless child at times, he's gone out into the world and experienced all of the darkest parts of it. Seen all of the worst things.
And he understands.

Inventory:
material blades- gifted to him from each of his fathers, Flamberge (Kratos' sword) and Vorpal sword (made by Dirk). imbued with the power of the eternal sword. technically not his strongest weapon in the game but shhh, just look at those things, they're beautiful.
angelus project exsphere- in simplest terms, exspheres are power enhancers. so long as you mount them on a key crest (carved by a dwarf, or Lloyd in a pinch). because if you don't you turn into a misshapen monster and that's just awkward really. exspheres are made from people, but not all exspheres are created equal. there are exspheres, and there are Cruxis crystals, and then there's Lloyd's special exsphere which is basically a cruxis crystal with none of the negative side effects.
noishe- Lloyd's pet dog. no, really.
...okay maybe not so really. so here's the real deal about the big eared green thing that is definitely not a dog Lloyd, how many dogs have you seen people ride. Noishe is actually an ancient creature called a Protozoan, and is over 4,000 years old. this might seem like a lot, but Lloyd's own dad is that old too so it's all relative, really. Noishe belonged to Kratos first, and was passed on to Lloyd after his mother's death.
over his lifetime, Noishe changes form and, in fact, first joined Kratos in the shape of a bird like creature called Aeros before evolving into his current shape as an Arshis. Noishe's final form will actually be a human who fights evil, but for now he's honestly a giant wuss that's terrified of monsters. Lloyd loves the crap out of him though.
zelos' chosen orb- Zelos' Cruxis crystal, left outside his door with a note after the second trip to Flanoir.
eternal ring- made it possible for Lloyd to use the Eternal sword despite not being a half-elf.
travel bag- filled with a misc. selection of healing gels, dry groceries, summoning gems, a small tool set, and a formal outfit rolled up at the very bottom of the bag along with a set of swim trunks.

Flaws:
Overall, Lloyd is actually a pretty terrible choice for bringing chaos into Hadriel, aside from maybe his own close personal ties to human trashbaby Zelos Wilder. He's an idealistic, fervent, well-meaning JRPG hero with enough love in his heart for the whole world---for two of them, even.

If he's a cinnamon roll too pure for this world though, he's a spicy one. The one real distinctive "flaw" that could honestly be attributed to him is the fact that he's got a bit of a temper. Typically this winds up getting directed at the bad guys, but every now and then his friends (Zelos mostly) get caught in the flare up as well.
They never last long though, and Lloyd is pretty terrible at holding grudges, even when he tries making some sort of vow basically to that exact point. Having a better understanding of a situation and not getting "picked on" by his friends are pretty good ways to keep his temper even in the long run.
In a perhaps less direct manner, Lloyd's own complete lack of comprehension or awareness for romance could also be considered a bit chaotic.
Lloyd seems to be almost completely blind to its existence, simplifying the subject of crushes or sexual interest to something more along the lines of finding people cool or impressive; he also seems to be under the absolutely false impression that he is not one of these "cool" or "impressive" people (he all but pushes Sheena and Zelos off on a "date" together at one point without realizing that Sheena has the most obvious crush in the world on him).
His obliviousness is honestly pretty impressive. He casually makes comments about marrying someone from Mizuho to learn their specialized method of card fighting (again, Sheena's crush on him is really obvious), responds to a subtle attempt to gauge his possible interest in a girl by honestly going off on a spiel on the various cool points of practically every girl he knows, and in one possible version of playthrough (not this one), he even winds up stripping out of his clothes in front of a female friend to lend her his clothes after her own get wet.
I can't make this shit up.
